    Vector observations are a common class of attitude data provided by a wide variety of attitude sensors. Attitude determination from vector observations is a well-understood process and numerous algorithms such as the TRIAD algorithm exist. These algorithms require measurement of the line of site (LOS) vector to reference objects and knowledge of the LOS directions in some predetermined reference frame. Once attitude is determined, it is a simple matter to synthesize vehicle rate using some form of lead-lag filter, and then, use it for vehicle stabilization. Many situations arise, however, in which rate knowledge is required but knowledge of the nominal LOS directions are not available. This paper presents two methods for determining spacecraft angular rates from vector observations without a priori knowledge of the vector directions. The first approach uses an extended Kalman filter with a spacecraft dynamic model and a kinematic model representing the motion of the observed LOS vectors. The second approach uses a 'differential' TRIAD algorithm to compute the incremental direction cosine matrix, from which vehicle rate is then derived

    We assessed the effects of ascorbic acid and total vitamin deficiencies on growth, food processing efficiencies and survival of larval gypsy moths. Artificial diet lacking ascorbic acid did not alter performance of fourth instars, whereas diet lacking a total vitamin mix margmally reduced growth. All vita- min deficient diets substantially reduced survival of fourth-fifth instars. Mortality occurred primarily during molting periods. providing further evidence of the putative role of ascorbic acid in cuticle formation

    Splitting Behavior of SnS_n-Polynomials

    We analyze the probability that, for a fixed finite set of primes S, a random, monic, degree n polynomial f(x) with integer coefficients in a box of side B around 0 satisfies: (i) f(x) is irreducible over the rationals, with splitting field over the rationals having Galois group SnS_n; (ii) the polynomial discriminant Disc(f) is relatively prime to all primes in S; (iii) f(x) has a prescribed splitting type at each prime p in S. The limit probabilities as B→∞B \to \infty are described in terms of values of a one-parameter family of measures on SnS_n, called splitting measures, with parameter zz evaluated at the primes p in S. We study properties of these measures. We deduce that there exist degree n extensions of the rationals with Galois closure having Galois group SnS_n with a given finite set of primes S having given Artin symbols, with some restrictions on allowed Artin symbols for p<n. We compare the distributions of these measures with distributions formulated by Bhargava for splitting probabilities for a fixed prime pp in such degree nn extensions ordered by size of discriminant, conditioned to be relatively prime to pp.Comment: 33 pages, v2 34 pages, introduction revise

    Universal Power-law Decay in Hamiltonian Systems?

    The understanding of the asymptotic decay of correlations and of the distribution of Poincar\'e recurrence times P(t)P(t) has been a major challenge in the field of Hamiltonian chaos for more than two decades. In a recent Letter, Chirikov and Shepelyansky claimed the universal decay P(t)∼t−3P(t) \sim t^{-3} for Hamiltonian systems. Their reasoning is based on renormalization arguments and numerical findings for the sticking of chaotic trajectories near a critical golden torus in the standard map. We performed extensive numerics and find clear deviations from the predicted asymptotic exponent of the decay of P(t)P(t). We thereby demonstrate that even in the supposedly simple case, when a critical golden torus is present, the fundamental question of asymptotic statistics in Hamiltonian systems remains unsolved.Comment: Phys.     Gambling Behaviors of Former Athletes: The Delayed Competitive Effect

    Gambling behaviors in current athletes, former athletes and non-athletes were examined. Gambling tendencies were determined from participants\u27 responses on the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS). A delayed competitive effect among athletes that might surface in the form of pathological gambling was investigated. To test this novel theory, participants were divided into three groups: athletes who are currently playing sports, former athletes who used to play competitive sports and non-athletes who have never participated in competitive sporting events. A 2 x 3 independent groups AN OVA was utilized comparing SOGS scores across gender and athletic status. The mean score for former athletes on the SOGS was significantly higher than for both current athletes and non-athletes as was the frequency of those classified as probable pathological gamblers suggesting the possibility that a delayed competitive effect might exist among former athletes. Additionally, a higher percentage of former athletes were involved in sports gambling

    The T cell antigen receptor consists of the Ti alpha/beta heterodimer which recognizes antigen, and the associated CD3 chains, thought to be involved in signal transduction. To understand the nature of the interaction between Ti and CD3, chimeric molecules which included the COOH-terminal segments of Ti alpha or beta linked to the extracellular segment of CD8, were transfected into a mutant T cell deficient in Ti beta chain expression and cell surface CD3. Both chimeric chains were required to express the chimeric Ti and to restore CD3 surface expression. CD8/Ti and CD3 cointernalized and coimmunoprecipitated. Stimulation of the chimeric receptor induced transmembrane signaling events and cell activation. These results demonstrate that the Ti alpha and beta COOH termini containing the transmembrane domains are sufficient for structural and functional coupling of Ti to CD3
